The Benefits of Sorting
Media
There are three
primary benefits of sorting media files...
backing up media, deleting media, and system
performance.
A.
Backing Up Media Files
Backing up media has been a
difficult task due to the way Avid systems store
media files; that is, all media files are placed
into the same folder (i.e. “OMFI MediaFiles”) on
each volume. Isolating one project’s media,
including precomputes, graphics, and titles, for
backup isn’t simple. By creating individual media
folders for each project’s media, MediaMover
makes this job much easier. Once media is sorted,
you can easily select the media folders you want
to backup and archive them directly from
MediaMover.
B.
Deleting Media
For the same reasons, deleting
all the media files associated with a project has
been difficult as well. As a result, it’s easy
for old media files from long completed projects
to remain hidden on the system’s hard drives
using up valuable disk space and system
resources. MediaMover finds all media files
associated with a project and sorts them quickly
and easily. Once sorting is completed, it is a
simple matter to delete a project’s media by
throwing away its media folders on each volume.
C. System
Performance
Avid editing systems
track all
media files found
in their media file folders (i.e. OMFI
MediaFiles). Every media file contained in the
folder is added to the Media Database file and
various system resources are allocated to deal
with each one... especially RAM memory. Even
projects you are not working on use these
resources and effect the performance of your
system. And, as you might expect, the more media
files on your system, the slower the system
performance is. By sorting out media files that
do not belong to the project you are working on,
you can significantly increase the your system’s
performance. With fewer media files to track,
more RAM and system resources are available where
you really need them... for editing.
